The six vocalises in this collection have been selected and arranged from Sonny Chua’s “Vocalises Book 1: A Barker’s Dozen”. The amount of arrangement required varies according to the piece, but my intention when arranging these pieces was to stay as true as possible to the original intention of each piece. Sonny’s notes for the original Vocalises read:

These exercises were written for the singer to develop control and confidence of various basic vocal techniques and, just as importantly, to express clear musical ideas – interpreting specific “feelings”.

Although you are developing different techniques when you transfer these pieces to the piano, you can approach the interpretation of “feelings” in the same manner. Aim for highly descriptive performances, trying to capture the emotional essence of each piece with your playing.

Sonny Chua’s music is characterised by its playfulness with styles and musical techniques. His music strives for the beauty of simplicity and brevity, and speaks in an accessible and lively language. As many of his piano pieces were written as educational works for his students, there is a particular emphasis in developing performance techniques in these works.
