Supersonics Piano Method Primer A

NEW IN 2021!

Start your piano students off the right way with Daniel McFarlane’s engaging new Primer series. Daniel combines elements of Kodály and Dalcroze with pedagogically sound technical development to produce a series that is not only bright, fun and entertaining, but also creates a solid musical platform for young pianists.

There are three books in the series. Each book contains ten units with each unit designed to be completed in a week. Most students will complete all three books but you are also able to just use one or two of the books for older students.

All the pieces are designed to be taught with a “sound first” approach. Students progress from copy cat singing to singing and signing to singing and playing (the singing is subtly introduced in order not to scare off reluctant singers). Students also learn how to construct their pieces on the score, developing a very strong connection between sound and symbol.

Students begin by naming their notes using pentatonic solfege (do, re, mi, so and la) as this is the best way to commence working on a student’s musical ear. As C=do we work on both perfect and relative pitch. Letter names are then introduced in Primer C and students learn to work with both sets of names. You will be amazed by how “tuned in” your students’ ears become as they complete the Primer series.

Primer A uses modified notation in order for students to have an extremely easy and accessible way to interact with the score. Primers B and C then move onto the stave. This series is not an “off the stave” approach, we simply add an extra step at the beginning in order for students to develop an extremely strong link between sound and symbol.

We only use two rhythmic elements in the series – “playing” and “not playing” (crotchets/quarter notes and crotchet/quarter note rests). This simplified introduction to beat and rhythm ensures a strong rhythmic base.

Technical skills are developed both at and away from the instrument. Each unit has finger exercises that work on finger joint proprioception and strength. All notes at the instrument in Primers A and B are played with a detached, whole arm technique. We then move onto simple slurring actions (only using 2nd and 3rd fingers) and wrist staccato in Primer C. Both hands are used right from the very first piece in order to ensure even technical development.

Students explore the instrument and develop their musical memories and organisational skills using rote pieces in Primers B and C. They get to use the pedal, play glissandos and explore the full range of the piano. It’s all great fun! For each piece the student has to create a “map” of the piece in their book. This develops their ability to efficiently mentally organise sounds. Primer A uses action songs and rhymes to begin developing this skill.

Each unit features a student composition. This is not a “free form” piece but is based on the skills featured in the earlier pieces in the unit. Students work out each piece away from the instrument using solfege, notate it and then play it. These creative tasks encourage students to work out what makes pieces “sound good”. Students also become proficient at notating their pieces.

Each piece features a teacher duet and backing track. Simplified duets (suitable for a parent or older sibling) are also available for Primer A. This fosters a collaborative approach to music making in both lessons and at home. “Singing and signing” videos are also available for students to use at home.

Online training videos are available so that you can feel supremely confident teaching the material. Try it out today!
